Simultaneous Interpreting
Simultaneous interpreting is the customary method used to translate and convey subject matter as it is spoken at conferences or seminars using a microphone and headphones, with the interpreters usually sitting in a soundproof booth.
The extreme concentration needed for successful simultaneous interpreting means that interpreters have to work alternately in shifts of round 30 minutes. You should therefore always plan for two interpreters per language direction.
A lower-cost alternative, in particular for training courses and so on, is the use of what is known as a “whisper” system. Here, the interpreter sits with the participants in the room.

Consecutive Interpreting
With consecutive interpreting, the interpreter sits between the discussion partners and translates what has been said at the end of each logical segment of the conversation.
The demands made on the interpreter here are different, but certainly not any easier. Interpreters must be capable of “storing” lengthy text passages in their short-term memory, translating them within seconds and conveying their meaning accurately and fluently.
